Its agonizingly slow pace kills the game for most competitive/skilled players.
5sk is not slow. Especially with team shot. If you were to increase the kill times team shot would be absolutely ludicrous and 1v1's would become meaningless.
Its slow kill times kill it for COD players.
Mother-**** call of duty. Seriously, people complain that this isn't Halo 2 or 3. That doesn't make enough sense since this is still Halo. But comparing it to CoD is just ridiculous.
Its emphasis on teamwork and complex systems you must learn kill it for casuals.
It's so difficult to learn to spam L and armor-lock. Oh and sprint and melee. Last but not least, the tried and true holding the left-stick down, around a corner, with a shotgun or sword... Damn! That's some really complex stuff, especially compared to previous Halo titles!
It really seems like they failed to appease any section of the community with reach. With HCE, H2, H3 the game had that easy to learn difficult to master feel that made it easily accessibly but also allowed for a competitive community to form.
Halo 3 was also not difficult to master. It was rather difficult to in essence, dumb down from the incredible depth of Halo 2. Halo 3 has very little in comparison to it, and is just as average as the other FPS's.
On the flip side that huge gap in skill doesnt seem to exist either. Its a very slow game that relies more on tactics than it does on skill. The problem is that the tactics are not THAT complex. Essentially everyone who "gets the game" will get stuck together and have a hard time breaking away.
sigh /rant
You're describing the same issue with Halo 3. The issue is there is this huge stigma in the inside and outside the Halo community that basically states that you have to satisfy the casual crowd. Because if you make a game that's supposed to be competitive you'll scare them away, and the self-labeled casuals are the "majority" of the community. Which is B.S. because if you're playing a game that's a 1v1, you're not going there to just stand there and get shot at. You're going to run around, shoot people, and enjoy winning. A game built so that people don't have to learn anything, and just shoot you to win, is a very crappy game. It's the kind of game that belongs on your I-phone. Anyways, this is a tangent.
The skill-gap doesn't exist because people don't want to learn and game producers listen. There's no more thought that maybe the reason why I'm playing versus is because I want to win. I can be casual and talk with my friends while playing and not care if I win or lose, but that's my choice to not give 100% on a game. No other event where two people are up against each other have rules made so that I can put zero effort and still win. Seriously, you don't put bricks in the gloves of one boxer just because he doesn't want to work to win.
Last thing I want to say is that the tactics in Halo have evolved to the point where there's nothing new and Bungie is sticking to what only works at the bare minimum. The people here in the community are made up mostly of people who don't like camping in a corner and tossing endless nades, but we do it anyways because that's the simple, easy way of winning. That's what Halo's become. There's no incentive to do anything BUT take the easy way out. People will quickly cover the "skill-gap" once they figure out all you gotta do is spam grenades and corner camping because that's how you win. Even the casual player wants to win. Which is why there's such a big issue of making the issue hard on casual players, they can't win without putting forth the effort.
