I (personally) don't really understand why some people are calling the default control scheme counterintuitive or unconventional. Bungie's supposed "golden triangle" (melee, shooting, grenades) are all on shoulders buttons, with their new "fourth layer of fun" (armor abilities) on a shoulder button as well.

This game is clearly trying to draw focus away from constantly jumping while being shot at (decreased speed/jumping height), giving the game a much different feeling than past halo games.

IMO, the default controls make the most logical sense in regards to the new diection bungie is taking this halo game. It takes a second to get used to at first, but once you do the game controls perfectly (again IMO).

Hi!

I just think it'd be cool to have control schemes that are identical to the controls for the first 3 games, so in-case you don't have ODST and you jump into it you can still have what you're used to, other than the armor abilities which'll probably be X or something.

I personally like the changes that Bungie made to the control scheme. I think placing melee on the bumper is the best place for it. This allows you to melee without moving your hand from the stick. This did take a while to get used to but I think it was an improvement to the overall gameplay.

I solved this problem in Halo 3 by swapping melee with zoom, that way my finger stays on the stick and I'm not accidentally zooming in in the middle of a close in battle, just because I pushed the stick button in the excitement - it also makes for a good way to follow up a shot with a melee hit.

Using the trigger for your Armour Ability might work fine for the jet pack but the trigger is connected to a potentiometer not a button. This makes a slight delay from the time you pull the trigger to the time the trigger pull is registered. This would be detrimental to abilities like Shield Lock where activating the lock in a short period of time can be the difference of living or getting blown away by a rocket launcher.

I personally would opt to move armor abilities to the D pad - something like the jet pack being directionally controlled, up / down / side / side through the D-pad as if it was a stick ( basically a copy of the left stick movements but only for the jet pack - sort of like how the Hornet in Halo-3 is controlled ) while using the D-pad button for on / off stuff.

Intuitive for some people but not for others.

I have heard that things like this is dependent on a couple of things:

The way people think. Sure many people will think in similar ways - others do not.

It is also dependent on learned reactions from all parts of life, as well as what people find useful.

It's also about people figuring out where they are having overall control problems, and changing things to make them of an issue.

I was having a problem with melee fights for a while, and I noticed that it was a combined issue of scoping in at the wrong time and/or loosing some of my directional control while I was hitting the "B" button.

Now I don't know about any one else, but I for one have no need to be scoping someone when they are close by, so I don't need to be zooming in when trying to be quickly maneuvering, so for my Halo 3 controls I have the controller configuration that put melee on the right stick button and put the zoom on the less often used "B" button.

I can zoom in fine when I am in the clear and have the extra fraction of a second to use it, and if I need to get out of it in a hurry, a quick melee brings me out of zoom, and my finger doesn't have to leave the stick.

It's not necessarily going to be good for someone else, but to me it's more intuitive, and there for, it is better than having the melee off on a button that has me loosing some directional control while I'm trying to hit someone.

I think there needs to be more of a delay time on the assassinations kills. I (and I have had heard others say) that they accidentally started the assassination when trying to do a quick melee attack. Meanwhile while your locked into it you get gunned down by passersby. I like the assassinations but you should have to hold the button down a little longer before it initiates.

For me it is the same about Bumper Jumper controls. I´m not much of a jumper, but when i have to, i don´t want to let go of the right stick. And there´s only one scheme to have jump on a shoulder button. I mentoined my thoughts a while ago to make my preferable control layout much better than it is right now in the beta. I will list them here again. What do you Bumper Jumpers think?

Shoulder Buttons:

LB - Jump (doubletap and hold for jetpack)
LT - Throw Grenades
RB - Melee
RT - Fire

Thumbbuttons:

X - Armorability (with toggle and hold settings for every armor ability customizable)
A - Switch Grenades
Y - Switch Weapon
B - Reload

Sticks:

Left Stick: Movement and Camera Controls in third person (only in Armor Lock)
Right Stick: Look/Camera Controls in third person

Leave the rest as it is.

I think that will work best for me. Any suggestions? And no, i don´t think they will make a fully customizable setting.

Because I use Bumper Jumper in Halo 3, I chose to use Bumper Jumper in Reach. This was all fine and dandy until I tried out the Jetpack. I couldn't turn and shoot!

So what I started doing was in Slayer Pro/Classic I would use the Bumper Jumper so I could still jump around and shoot and use X for sprint.

Then whenever I got a normal Slayer game on Swordbase or CTF or whatever in Grab Bag I would switch to Default so I could use my jetpack and aim aswell.

What I'm trying to say is, each control scheme has it's own advantages/disadvantages and whatever your play style is, you have to choose the right control scheme. I don't think that any controls need to be changed, they are perfect the way they are.

Although, I'm not sure whether this would be too complicated, but if you could have a setting where you choose what control scheme you wanted with each loadout that would be perfect.

It would mean that whenever I choose Sprint I could have Bumper Jumper and whenever I choose Jetpack I could have Default, instead of having to press start and change it in game.

Luck.

-X hold to exit vehicle time is too long.

Left Trigger: Armour Ability <-Easier Jetpack shooting. (Suggested by Marrrrrrrrk)
Right Trigger: Use Weapon
Left Bumper: Jump
Right Bumper: Grenade

Left Analog: Movement, Click to Teabag
Right Analog: Aim, Click to Zoom

Y: Swap Weapon
B: Action/Reload
A: Melee Attack <- Fastest button to press.
X: Switch Grenade

you won't be able to turn and hit simulatneously which is kinda bad imo

All we need is a user customiztion option so we can map the buttons however we feel is right for us. I have adjusted the way I play and feel the default settings are good for novices to get a feel, but we can become masters with our own layout.

I liked the layout of the Recon controls. Seeing that only the LB and X buttons were switched from Halo 3, this is the control scheme I will continue to use in the Fall.

Using clawing seems better for Bumper Jumper players than using this scheme. Clawing gets your mind into the game more and getting use to it seems more skillful action overtime.

Fear the Fish

All Bungie has to do to make Bumper Jumper perfect is enable the jump button to activate the jetpack (and only the jetpack) if the button is held down or if the player is in the air.
Problem solved.

I agree with the Spartan. The Recon control setup feels the most natural to me and I found myself trying to use the same controls when I switched back to halo 3.
